On 8th March , 1794,
Rev Samuel
Beamish chaired a meeting of ‘the Gentlemen and
principal inhabitants of the town and vicinity of
Bandon' to discuss the disturbances occurring in the
county particularly in Dunmanway and Ballineen.
Rev Beamish commented that the Country had
reached a degree of prosperity not known before and that
he believed that there were no grounds for such
disquiet.
The meeting was called to support Law and Order.
In order to suppress the riots and disorder, he
called for a subscription.
The funds would go towards carrying out
prosecutions and rewarding those who would give
information about the offenders.
The chair pledged to keep the names of the
informers secret for their protection.
The riots were being suppressed by Lord Bandon,
Lieutenant Powell of the 14th Dragoons and
the magistrates. Timothy Deasy, junior’s house had been
surrounded and he was repeatedly asked to take, what the
committee considered to be, unlawful oaths. Henry Cox
procured the military force in cooperation with Robert
Longfield Connor, Esq. The committee was comprised of:
