MEETING HELD IN MARCH 1794 TO RAISE FUNDS TO QUELL DISTURBANCES

On 8th March , 1794,  Rev Samuel Beamish chaired a meeting of ‘the Gentlemen and principal inhabitants of the town and vicinity of Bandon' to discuss the disturbances occurring in the county particularly in Dunmanway and Ballineen.  Rev Beamish commented that the Country had reached a degree of prosperity not known before and that he believed that there were no grounds for such disquiet.  The meeting was called to support Law and Order.  In order to suppress the riots and disorder, he called for a subscription.  The funds would go towards carrying out prosecutions and rewarding those who would give information about the offenders.  The chair pledged to keep the names of the informers secret for their protection. The riots were being suppressed by Lord Bandon, Lieutenant Powell of the 14th Dragoons and the magistrates. Timothy Deasy, junior’s house had been surrounded and he was repeatedly asked to take, what the committee considered to be, unlawful oaths. Henry Cox procured the military force in cooperation with Robert Longfield Connor, Esq. The committee was comprised of:
